Legislative Committee has Eye on Athens in Developing Short-term Rental Recommendations

When does the short-term rental of a home, as happens throughout Athens during the University of Georgia’s football season when lodging is at a premium, stop being an informal moneymaking opportunity and start being a business?
The answer, according to state Rep. Spencer Frye, D-Athens, member of a state House of Representatives study committee that has looked at the short-term rental issue during the past few months, is somewhere around 12 days. The final report of the House Study Committee on Short-Term Rental Providers, filed recently and made available on the Georgia General Assembly’s website, www.legis.ga.gov, suggests 15 days ought to be the limit, with anything beyond that becoming subject to tax collection and governmental regulation.
