Athens-Clarke Planners Raise Questions About Massive Development Proposed for Atlanta Highway

A proposal for a massive residential and commercial development covering 215 acres off Atlanta Highway in the edge of western Athens-Clarke County raised eyebrows on the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission Thursday evening.
“This gives me heartburn,” Planning Commissioner Lucy Rowland said as she considered the long list of waivers from the county’s zoning ordinance being requested by developer Walton Georgia LLC for the proposed development, which would include more than 300 single-family residences, almost 550 apartments, and which contemplates seven buildings along Atlanta Highway for unspecified commercial uses.
