Downtown Athens Hotel Project Seeks Tax Incentive Program from Athens-Clarke County
Friday, October 16th, 2015
Athens-Clarke County’s mayor and commission are being asked to create the county’s first Tax Allocation District — a tax incentive program used as an economic development tool — to bring a new hotel to downtown Athens with a direct connection to The Classic Center, the county’s public convention and performance space.
Almost nine years ago, Athens-Clarke voters gave the mayor and commission the authority to create TADs — known everywhere but in Georgia as TIFs, or tax increment financing — with an 11,092-to-9,342 vote in a November 2006 referendum.
