Former Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Jack Lumpkin made the trip from Savannah Tuesday to accept the Athens-Area Chamber of Commerce Bentley Award in honor of his years of service to the community.
The award was one of several presented at the Chamber’s annual banquet.
“Never have I seen a public servant put the safety and well-being of a community in front of everything else the way that he did,” Chamber President Doc Eldridge said of Lumpkin, who retired from the Athens-Clarke County police in January and soon after took the helm of the Savannah-Chatham police department.
