Georgia Theatre Sold to Group of Investors

An hour after signing away his ownership stake in the Georgia Theatre Tuesday afternoon, Wilmot Greene settled into the worn-in sectional in the venue’s green room.

“There’s an imprint in this exact spot, I’ve sat here so many times,” he joked.

He’ll be a fixture at the iconic downtown venue for a few more months until he passes the torch to the Theatre’s new general manager Drew Beskin in early 2015. A musician and former marketing executive, Beskin was chosen for the job by the principals of Agon Sports and Entertainment, the same company that bought the Augusta Greenjackets in Fall 2012.

Since he bought the Theatre in 2004, and after it burned in 2009, Greene said he’s entertained offers from several buyers, but Agon kept his attention. Now, he said, he’s ready to let it go to someone with the energy he had a decade ago. Putting it plainly, he said, “I’m tired.”
