In its last regular meeting of the year, the Savannah Economic Development Authority on Tuesday recognized two new businesses, approved an incentive package for another and welcomed the state’s top economic development official to Savannah.
Shaw Industries, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer, has relocated its Southeast distribution center to Savannah from Columbia, S.C., already doubling its original 156,000 square footage on Northport Parkway to more than 300,000 square feet.
While Shaw, which is headquartered in Dalton in northwest Georgia, manufactures its own carpet, hardwood and laminate flooring, it imports resilient plank flooring and ceramic tile, much of it through the Port of Savannah, said Randy Smith, director of regional distribution.
“Savannah is a really good fit for us. Right now, we’re bringing in 130 containers a week, and it’s not our peak season,” Smith said.
