Hollie Burris Turns Personal Loss into Community Movement with First-Ever You Matter Mental Health Awareness Festival
Tuesday, August 11th, 2026
What began as one woman's determination to ensure no one feels alone has grown into a community-wide movement.
On Saturday, September 26, the inaugural You Matter Mental Health Awareness Festival, presented by BankSouth, will bring together local nonprofits, schools, churches, healthcare providers, recovery organizations, businesses, and residents at Madison's Town Park for a day focused on hope, healing, education, and connection. The free community event will feature live music, inspiring speakers, survivor stories, food trucks, local vendors, and mental health resources for all ages.
For organizer Hollie Burris, the festival is deeply personal.
Following the tragic loss of her husband in 2025, Burris felt called to create something that could help others facing similar struggles.
“Mental health issues have been an unwelcome part of my life and family for years. This festival was born after the tragic loss of my husband to suicide in June 2025,” said Burris. “As I have opened up about my story, it has allowed some people to feel the freedom to share their own stories with me. I am truly humbled that someone would trust me with their darkest moments. I want anyone and everyone to feel like they can share their story and not be afraid of being judged for it. Everyone needs to know they are not alone. NO ONE has to fight their battles alone.”
Burris has also been encouraged by the support of her BankSouth family, with several employees volunteering their time and contributing to the festival through the bank's $80 for 80 community giving initiative in celebration of BankSouth's 80th anniversary.
The festival's mission is simple but powerful:
"To shine a light on mental health and suicide awareness because every life matters, every story deserves to be heard, and together, we can build a community where no one suffers in silence."
The response from the community has already exceeded expectations. More than two dozen vendors, nonprofits, businesses, churches, and community organizations have committed to participating, with additional vendors continuing to join as the event approaches. The festival is supported by sponsors including Spread Love of Georgia, Grace Fellowship Church Madison, Redeemer Church of Madison and Fusion Church of Madison..
The You Matter Mental Health Awareness Festival will be held Saturday, September 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Town Park in Madison. Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages. Organizers encourage families, friends, and neighbors to attend, learn about available mental health resources, and help build a stronger, more supportive community.
