Founder of Athens Orthopedic Clinic and prominent alumnus of the University of Georgia, Dr. Butch Mulherin, passed away on March 18, 2025. His lifelong impact on UGA’s athletic programs as a former student-athlete, his pioneering work in sports medicine, and his tireless dedication to the Athens community leave a lasting legacy.

Dr. Mulherin filled a pivotal role in the development of sports medicine as one of the first full-time orthopedic surgeons in the area to provide daily care to the University of Georgia’s athletic programs. He traveled to every football away game and attended practices for multiple sports. As an offensive and defensive end for the Bulldogs from 1953 to 1955, Mulherin received the Hartman Award in 2017.

“Dr. Mulherin’s time as a student-athlete ultimately shaped the path he took in medicine,” said Mike Boblitz, CEO of Athens Orthopedic Clinic. “It’s evident his commitment to excellence on and off the field served as a guiding principle for his life and leaves an indelible mark on the team members carrying the torch at AOC today.”

In addition to his work with UGA’s athletic programs, Dr. Mulherin is also remembered for his pioneering work in arthroscopic surgery, which was previously unknown in the region. His innovative approach not only revolutionized sports medicine but also laid the foundation for the continued growth of Athens Orthopedic Clinic.

Founded in 1966 with just two exam rooms and a single nurse, Athens Orthopedic Clinic has since grown to become one of the largest and most respected orthopedic practices in the region. Dr Mulherin’s legacy remains strong with 78 total providers caring for over 232,000 patients last year alone. In honor of his profound influence on the organization and the field of orthopedic care, the clinic's surgery center is named the William B. Mulherin Surgery Center.

“Dr. Butch Mulherin’s contributions to UGA, the field of sports medicine and Athens Orthopedic Clinic will continue to inspire generations to come,” said Boblitz. “His legacy of care, leadership and dedication will not be forgotten.”

Dr. Mulherin’s family remains a vital part of his legacy. He married Ann Collins Mulherin, the love of his life, in 1955. Together, they had two children, Philip Hilton Mulherin and Laura Annetta Mulherin (deceased), and most recently, granddaughter Mary Gordon Mulherin.
