Foundation for Excellence Announces Clarke School Award Nominees

The Foundation for Excellence in Public Education in Clarke County announced its 2017 award nominees. The nominees, all employees of the Clarke County School District, were honored with a tea sponsored by Athens First Bank &Trust, Michael Ripps of Jittery Joe’s, and Ron Schwartz of Trumps.

The winners of the awards, as well as the latest recipients of foundation grants, will be announced on the first day of school district pre-planning in August. The winners will be honored at an Oct. 9 banquet at The Georgian in downtown Athens.

There were 84 applications submitted this year, up from 68 in 2016. The applications represented 16 of the 21 schools in the Clarke Colunty School District. The nominees are:

Alps Road Elementary: Joycette Bell and Ashlea Campbell.

Barnett Shoals Elementary: Johnetta Barnett, Emily Christopher, Leigh Ann Emrick and Jacie Hortman.

Barrow Elementary: Haley Cullum, Regenia Dalton and Jennifer Leahy.

Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle: Alex Holman, Heather Holman, Matthew Smith, Kathleen Williams and Christina Wilson.

Cedar Shoals High School: Erin Adamson, Elesha Coons, Liza Fennelly, Stella Guerrero, Elizabeth Haas, Rosemary Milsap, Megan Ogden, Natasha Patterson, Gene Williams and Mary Lynn Zimpfer.

Chase Street Elementary: Cameron Brooks, Natalia Ferrando and Betsy Nesmith.

Clarke Central High School: Johnny Anderson, Brooke Craft, Alex Henson, Courtney Jones, Elizabeth Mooney, Terry Reid, Scott Swain, April Tedeschi and Marie Yuran.

Clarke Middle: Elaine Dunn, Ashlee Perry and Patty Tudman.

Classic City High School: Eric Duncan and Phyllis Sanders.

Cleveland Road Elementary: Britany Boucher, Brittany Dillard, Lawana Reid and Tanya Long.

Coile Middle: Alaina Hughey, Frederic Rushing and Paul Sellew.

Fowler Drive Elementary: Tava Aziabor, Ann Benedek, Kimberly Bosquet, Wendy Greer, Kala Jordan, Lisa Lane, Yoshika Middlebrooks, Christie Navarro, Pauly Shenton and Bernita White.

Hilsman Middle: Laurie Camp, Cassie Crenshaw, Audrey Hughes, Dorothy Jones, Mark Martin, Janet Micheletti, Conor Naughton, Pierre Oulevey, Melanie Picha, Meganne Skinner and Alexis Zabetakis.

Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary: Karen Collins, Leigh Anne Lindsey, Megan Makin and Andrea Tillman.

School Nutrition: Jonathan Burke.

Stroud Elementary: Leslie Brown, Cassandra Burch, Tiffany Coleman, Feliscia Parrish, Justin Rebitch, Lauren Ritter and Marsha Thomas.

Whit Davis Elementary: Steven King, Andrea Rowe and Lewis Watson.

The awards being presented this year are:

Cardee Kilpatrick Chair for Middle School Teachers ($1,250 for two years).

Ann M. Schindel Chair for Teachers of Mathematics ($1,250 for two years).

Thomas H. Whitehead Chair for Teachers of Science ($1,250 for two years).

Joan D. Humphries Excellence in Teaching Award ($500 for two years).

Ken Sherman Double Century Excellence in Teaching Award ($500 for two years).

Kathryn H. Hug Instructional Leadership Award ($500 for two years).

Seasoned Teacher Award ($500 for two years).

Walter Allen, Sr. Inspiring Teacher Award ($500).

Bertis Downs District Services Award (two awards at $500).

Howard B. Stroud Community Service Award ($500).

Freida M. Thomas Teacher of Promise Award ($500).

Galis Family Award for Teachers of History and Social Studies ($500 for two years).

Since its founding in 1983, the Foundation for Excellence has given almost $600,000 in award and grant funds.
