The Foundation for Excellence in Public Education in Clarke County announced its 2017 award nominees. The nominees, all employees of the Clarke County School District, were honored with a tea sponsored by Athens First Bank &Trust, Michael Ripps of Jittery Joe’s, and Ron Schwartz of Trumps.
The winners of the awards, as well as the latest recipients of foundation grants, will be announced on the first day of school district pre-planning in August. The winners will be honored at an Oct. 9 banquet at The Georgian in downtown Athens.
There were 84 applications submitted this year, up from 68 in 2016. The applications represented 16 of the 21 schools in the Clarke Colunty School District. The nominees are:
Alps Road Elementary: Joycette Bell and Ashlea Campbell.

Ken Sherman Double Century Excellence in Teaching Award ($500 for two years).

Walter Allen, Sr. Inspiring Teacher Award ($500).
Bertis Downs District Services Award (two awards at $500).
Howard B. Stroud Community Service Award ($500).
Freida M. Thomas Teacher of Promise Award ($500).
Galis Family Award for Teachers of History and Social Studies ($500 for two years).
Since its founding in 1983, the Foundation for Excellence has given almost $600,000 in award and grant funds.
