Looking at Your Personal Financial Health; Buzz Law, President of Creative Financial Group

For Buzz Law, president of Creative Financial Group, it was love at first sight.
“I’ve spent my entire 30-year career at Creative Financial Group,” Buzz says. With childhood memories of his father working alongside his own financial planner, and having studied business with a focus on finance at the University of Georgia, Buzz knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life. “After graduation, I was asked by a fraternity brother to join his family’s firm, where I was able to learn about the industry,” he explains. Buzz then went on to buy the firm and make it his own, when the time was right.
Though his own career trajectory was a simple — and astral — trajectory through the roof of financial planning, what Buzz does at Creative Financial Group is more complex. “I have a strong belief in looking at a person’s entire financial health and making sure that everything is working in concert,” he explains. “We lead with financial planning and don’t provide asset management without the financial planning piece in place.” This integrated approach to finances brings both short- and long-term financial goals into focus.
“We work in partnership with our clients to look at cash flow, estate planning, insurance needs, tax planning and preparation and asset management,” Buzz goes on. “With this holistic viewpoint, we are able to be proactive rather than reactive to market volatility.” In a world as wildly mercurial as financial affairs, this approach is a significant asset to Buzz and his clients.
But what’s a day in the life of a financial planner? “Family and faith come first and everything else follows,” Buzz says. At the office, his work begins with a review of market expectations for the day, as well as a comprehensive look at both local and world news.
Then, his favorite part: working with his clientele. “The majority of my day is spent meeting and talking with my clients,” Buzz says, “whether that’s a comprehensive review or working with them on a specific issue that needs to be addressed.”
Next up, Buzz focuses on his capable staff. “I spend time working with my team to ensure that we are providing the best service for our clients,” he explains. “Also, as president of Creative Financial Group, I mentor other planners in the firm and determine our corporate goals and work with the planners to achieve these goals.” His hard work in these arenas pays off. “I have a great support team that helps manage my client relationships,” Buzz says. This enables Buzz to manage the many complex responsibilities on his plate, while also making time for the all-important work-life balance.
One key to Buzz’s success is a deep understanding not just of the market but of the cyclical nature of life itself. “It is important to be able to multi-task and remember that financial planning is not static, but ever-changing as each client’s situation evolves through their careers and lives,” Buzz says. This insight guides the days as they turn to weeks, months, years — a lifetime of financial planning and asset management.
Buzz gives meaning to the passing time through more than just his robust career in financial planning. “I believe it is important to remember to give back to the community and make philanthropic and charitable efforts a priority,” he says humbly. From his long-term service to the Dunwoody Rotary, to a recent appointment by Governor Nathan Deal to the Technical College System of Georgia, the ways in which Buzz gives back are numerous. The commitment to philanthropy is also company-wide: Creative Financial Group sends care packages to military service people overseas, positively impacting lives around the globe.
Buzz’s recommendation to anyone, from an aspiring CEO to someone looking to make long-term financial plans, is deceptively simple: “Don't sacrifice long-term relationships for short-term gains.” Looking back at his 30-year career thus far at Creative Financial Group — and beyond that to his fraternity days and the influence of his father’s own financial insight — it’s clear Buzz takes his own advice to heart, honoring long-term relationships and reaping their rewards.
With a mindset like that, love at first sight becomes something much more — a fulfilling and lifelong bond.
