Athens Academy Students Sign to Play Collegiate Athletics

Athens Academy is pleased to announce five seniors signed today to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. This morning the following were recognized at a special signing ceremony in the Farmer Field House:


• Sam Bush is a preferred walk-on for the University of Georgia Bulldogs this fall in Athens. Sam was the Spartans’ quarterback for the past three seasons. He has been at Athens Academy since the sixth grade.
• Will Hines will join the Washington and Lee University Generals swim team next year in Lexington, Virginia. He has been a member of the Athens Academy swim team since he came to the school in eighth grade; he also swims locally with Athens Bulldog Swim Club.
• Garrett Kennedy has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he will join the Falcons’ swim team. Garrett won the gold medal for his 100m backstroke at the state championship several weeks ago. He has been at Athens Academy since Preschool.
• Jackson Scruggs will attend Vanderbilt University next year, following in the footsteps of mom Carrie Jackson Scruggs (Class of 1992). Jackson will run for the Commodores’ cross country and track teams. He has been a Spartan since Preschool.
• ClaraJane Williams has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy, where she will play soccer for the Midshipmen. She has been at Athens Academy since the fifth grade and joined the Spartan soccer team in Upper School after many years playing club soccer.


In addition to these five students, three Athens Academy volleyball players signed letters of intent last fall. Mary Miller will play for Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland; Olivia Nealy will play for Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts; and Mara Thomas will play for Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.
