Athens Academy Graduates Honored for Service & Spirit

During Athens Academy’s Senior Honors Day in May, Head of School John Thorsen and Upper School Director Susan Zalac were pleased to recognize several members of the Class of 2021 for their outstanding school spirit and service during their Upper School years. These awards, named for two dedicated Spartans, include the Robert F. Marion Award and the Richard J. Patterson Spartan Award.

The Robert F. Marion Award: Mary Goggin & Clara Miller

This award is presented to two seniors in recognition of their outstanding service to the school and community as their actions reflect the selfless devotion to the ideals and philosophy of Athens Academy, as manifest in the spirit of lifetime trustee Robert Marion (1925-2009).

  • Mary Goggin is the daughter of Tom and Sherri Goggin of Athens. She will attend the University of Georgia as part of the Honors Program.

  • Clara Miller is the daughter of Bobbi Jo Imbrogno of Hull. She will attend Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, this fall.

    The Richard J. Patterson Spartan Award: John Ferguson & Jack Nasworthy

    This award, named in honor of longtime biology teacher Richard Patterson, is presented those seniors who loyally exhibit school spirit and radiate that special enthusiasm that inspires other students. Through conscientious academic initiative and participation in school activities, these students best exemplify the finest personal qualities of honor and concern for their fellow man.

    • John is the son of Dick and Susan Ferguson of Athens. He will attend the University of Georgia this fall, where he will play football.

    • Jack is the son of Scott and Amy Nasworthy of Bogart. He will attend the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).
