U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) announced the University of Georgia (UGA) will be receiving $475,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to improve crop production. The grant will allow UGA to study “blossom-end rot” in tomatoes.

“Tomatoes are grown on farms and backyards across Georgia, representing a farm gate value of $51 million and an important piece of our state’s fruit and vegetable production,” said Loeffler. “This grant will bolster UGA’s research into how to prevent blossom-end rot and improve crop production. This is good news for farmers, and good news for all of us who love BLTs, tomato pie and fried green tomatoes.”
