Local Interfaith Network Helping the Homeless Makes Urgent Appeal to Athens Business Community and Residents

Staff Report From Athens CEO

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

During this special time of the year, we often take a few minutes to count our blessings and to think of ways we can share our good fortune with others. I hope that you will consider sharing your blessing to help a family in need—and thanks to a generous matching gift, any donation you make between now and December 31 will be DOUBLED.

Homeless families are no different from anyone else’s. They include parents who love their children dearly and want what is best for them. There is, however, a devastating difference. Instead of dreams focused on school recitals, first dates, graduations, and weddings, homeless families struggling with unemployment, illness, or some other family tragedy are forced to put those kinds of dreams on hold. Instead, homeless families offer heartbreakingly simple prayers--for food for the children, for a safe place to sleep at night, and above all, for a way to keep the family together.

Here in Athens, Interfaith Hospitality Network assists homeless families by providing shelter and meals and by offering assistance in locating employment and affordable housing. Volunteers set up accommodations in their congregations, prepare meals, read to the children, and talk with and listen to the parents. Volunteers and families in need often form personal bonds that last long after the families have found permanent housing.

Last year, many individuals and families in our area gave personal donations to help achieve our mission. There are so many homeless families and homeless children who need our help. And we need your help to help them.

May we count on you for a donation at this most special time of year?

And as a special bonus, the IHNA board and staff and several other individuals have created a Double Your Dollars Match, which is in effect today until December 31, 2016. For instance, if you donate $100, your contribution will be matched with an additional $100, thus making a total of $200 available to provide childcare and other direct expenses for our families. With your help, this generous support potentially will provide an additional $15,000 in matching funds to IHNA and ensure safe, compassionate, and stable housing for our homeless children.

We are most grateful for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Davin Welter                                                         Stacy Pardue
