Athens Academy ninth grader Remy Marty has won the Congressional Art Competition with her graphite portrait Tove Jansson. The contest is the U.S. House of Representatives’ official art competition, and her artwork will represent Georgia District 10 in the U.S. Capitol gallery for the next year.

In addition, Remy has won a trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national awards ceremony and see her artwork on display in the Capitol.

Senior Lucy Hayes’ colored pencil piece Bones placed second in the district. Senior Seager Hunt and sophomore Carson Nelson were also finalists with their artwork Lunch Break and Ulysses S. Grant, respectively.

All four artists were honored at a reception at the Georgia Museum of Art on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Representative Mike Collins was on hand to present the awards and congratulate each student. Twenty-four finalists from District 10 high schools were honored at the ceremony.

According to their website, the Congressional Institute “sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.” Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

“Athens Academy had an incredible showing for the Congressional Art Competition,” said art teacher Luke Graves. “All four of our artists were finalists--Lucy Hayes, Seager Hunt, Remy Marty, and Carson Nelson--with Lucy taking home second place and Remy as the first place winner! I am so proud of all of them!”
