Staff Report From Athens CEO

Wednesday, November 13th, 2019

The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC) invites professional artists to submit their proposals for consideration in the roundabout project at Whitehall Road and South Milledge Avenue, Athens, Georgia. The selected artist(s) will work with the ACAC and government staff to create an artwork that complements the roundabout’s design and function while enhancing a gateway to the community.

Athens-Clarke County, GA is a university town known for its historic, diverse, and creative environment. The roundabout at Whitehall Road and Milledge Avenue is a TSPLOST-funded traffic calming project. These roads stem from several communities including historic Whitehall, Athens, and Watkinsville. Its proximity to the county line makes it a kind of gateway. The location is semi-rural, immediately surrounded by low-density, low-rise commercial and University of Georgia properties, including the Whitehall Forest and Livestock Arena.

The site for public art will be at the center of the roundabout. The size of the roundabout’s diameter is approximately 80 feet. Landscaping has been installed, but can be moved as needed to allow for the artwork.

Proposed public art area:

The goals for including public art in this project are to enhance the roundabout’s visual appeal, as well as to foster community identity and pride.

The deadline for receiving proposals is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2019.

The submission form is available online.
