Staff Report From Athens CEO

Monday, October 21st, 2019

The current Fire Station #2 located at 3500 Mitchell Bridge Road will close permanently as of Sat., Oct. 19 when the newly-constructed Fire Station #2 at 265 Cleveland Road is placed into service.

The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony at the new Fire Station #2 on Sunday, October 20 at 2:30 p.m. The event will include self-guided tours of the new station, refreshments, and activities for all ages.

The need to replace the existing station was identified as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 2011 program approved by Athens-Clarke County voters on November 2, 2010. The existing station was originally occupied in 1980. Built adjacent to the new Athens-Clarke County Extension Office, the new Fire Station #2 will not only provide a more centrally-located facility relative to the West Athens service area, but also includes a community room for events and updated facilities for firefighters.
