Local-area gyms CrossFit Liberate and CrossFit Oconee have partner, in collaboration with national the recovery drink Kill Cliff, to host a Memorial Day event benefitting the Navy SEAL Foundation, which provides immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and its families.

The Memorial Day event, which will take place in downtown Athens on Monday, May 27 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., is open to anyone and will consist of an honorary workout in memory of Michael P. Murphy, a Navy Lieutenant who lost his life in Afghanistan in June 2005.

The workout, nicknamed “Murph,” is a favorite of the fallen hero. In addition to the workout, the event will also include food provided by Rashe's Cuisine, music and a spectator area.

There’s a $50 registration fee to participate in the event, which includes a plate from Rashe’s, and additional food will be available for purchase for family and friends spectating. Proceeds for the event will benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation.

“This Memorial Day event is huge within the CrossFit community, and we’re very excited to be able to open it up to all fitness levels and host something locally for our community to participate in,” said Jan Kozak, founder, co-owner and head coach of CrossFit Liberate. “We’re pleased to partner with other organizations like CrossFit Oconee to support the important programs offered by the Navy SEAL Foundation, which help to improve the health and welfare among the naval warfare community.”

The foundation, established in 2000, is a national non-profit based in Virginia. According to the foundation, it serves as a resolute cornerstone for the Naval Special Warfare community and their families in times of adversity and triumph.

“It helps to build and enhance resiliency, empower and educate these families, and provides critical support during times of illness, injury and loss for these people,” Kozak said. “It’s an amazing program to support, and we’re excited to throw this fun event benefitting it.”

All funds raised at the Memorial Day event will be matched by Kill Cliff, an official partner of the Navy Seal Foundation.

The May 27 event will take place outside of CrossFit Liberate in downtown Athens, located at 425 East Dougherty Street. The street will be blocked off, with parking available.
