Ten Students from Oconee County Schools Tapped for Governor’s Honors Program

Staff Report From Athens CEO

Thursday, April 11th, 2019

Ten students from Oconee County Schools have been named finalists and will be attending the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP), a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. A function of the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, it will take place on the campus of Berry College in Rome, Ga.

“We congratulate these ten exceptional students on earning the privilege of being named a Governor’s Honors Program finalist,” said Superintendent Jason L. Branch. “Their hard work and the dedicated support of their parents and teachers is being recognized and valued through this selection. Our entire community is incredibly proud.”

Over 3,000 students from across the state were interviewed and auditioned over three weekends in January and February, and from those nominees around 700 finalists were chosen to participate in the 2019 program. Since the program is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly, there is no charge for students to attend. Students will attend the program Jun. 16-Jul. 13, and they will spend the morning in their major area of nomination. During the afternoons, students choose one of the other areas in which to study. Evenings are filled with seminars, activities, concerts, and performances.
