Staff Report From Athens CEO

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019

A list of all 88 projects submitted by Athens-Clarke County departments, outside organizations, and individuals is now available online at www.accgov.com/splost2020. The list contains information about each project's title, submitting agency or individual, total capital costs, and time and date of its presentation to the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 2020 Citizens Advisory Committee.

Each project has a scheduled time for a presentation to the 22-member committee followed by a brief question and answer opportunity with the committee. All of the committee meetings are held at the Snipes Water Resources Center at 780 Barber Street. A full calendar of upcoming meetings is available at www.accgov.com/splost2020.

Project pages are currently under construction for each proposed project to include additional project details, full project submissions, annual operating costs, videos of the presentations to the committee, alternate project versions, and supplemental information.

The SPLOST 2020 Citizens Advisory Committee is tasked with recommending a list of projects to the Mayor and Commission by May 14, 2019 for possible inclusion in the SPLOST 2020 program that will be voted on by Athens-Clarke County citizens in November 2019. The Mayor and Commission will ultimately select the final projects included in the program. Currently, the SPLOST 2020 Citizens Advisory Committee is hearing presentations of $1.2 billion in proposed projects in order to recommend $248 million in projects for the SPLOST 2020 program.

Public input opportunities will be available at several points during the program development timeline. If approved by voters in November 2019, the SPLOST 2020 sales tax collection would begin in April 2020 and would retain the current sales tax rate of 8%. The sales tax rate would not increase as a result of approving a SPLOST 2020 program.
