Staff Report From Athens CEO

Friday, November 2nd, 2018

This week, Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center hosted a groundbreaking event at its Oconee Health Campus to celebrate the start of construction for a new Orthopedics and Sports Medicine building.

The new 24,000 square-foot building will house the Piedmont Physicians Orthopedic Sports Medicine in Athens team, led by Robert Hancock, M.D., board-certified orthopedic surgeon with certification in sports medicine.

With Piedmont serving as the official healthcare provider for the University of Georgia (UGA) Athletic Association, the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine building will aid the many UGA athletes in the area, as well as other athletes throughout Northeast Georgia. Dr. Hancock has been a consultant for the UGA athletics department since 1995.

Tentatively scheduled to open in spring 2019, the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine building will also include a Sports Rehabilitation Center, which will have state-of-the-art equipment and an outdoor rehabilitation space.

“We are excited to bring this service to our community and to our campus,” said Delena Brockmann, executive director of the Oconee Health Campus.

This expansion will be the third of the Oconee Health Campus, which first opened its doors in April 2017.

The Oconee Health Campus brings the high-quality healthcare services for which Piedmont Athens Regional is known to one convenient location closer to home for the residents of Oconee County. Services include Piedmont Urgent Care, laboratory and imaging services, a retail pharmacy, primary care, pediatric care, women’s health services and Piedmont’s cardiology group.
