Staff Report From Athens CEO

Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

At the Nov. 13 Oconee County Board of Education meeting, the Board unanimously approved an elementary redistricting plan due to the opening of Dove Creek Elementary School in August 2018. With 15.4% growth since 2013 and two elementary schools currently above building capacity, this plan will bring all elementary schools below 750 students.

“This redistricting plan is a reflection of the Board of Education’s goal to meet the growth of the future, as our district is one of the fastest growing in Northeast Georgia,” said Board Chair Tom Odom. “The Board has been very diligent in reviewing all of the information that has come before us including public input, maps and enrollment projections.”

More information is available on the district’s web site at: www.oconeeschools.org/redistricting. On this site are the new redistricted map and a street index. Of note on the street index:

  • All streets northwest of Highway 78 are rezoned for Dove Creek Elementary School, to open in Fall 2018. They are not included on the list since it includes all streets in that area.

  • The street index includes only streets proposed for redistricting from Malcom Bridge Elementary School to Rocky Branch Elementary School.

The Board of Education hosted a Listening session Tues., Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at North Oconee High School. In addition, a variety of feedback was submitted via an online form that was made available for the last two months to the OCS community.

“We appreciate the work of the OCS staff and the involvement of our community in this redistricting process,” said Odom.
