Ryan Moore: A Downtown Renaissance in Athens

A downtown office is one of the many perks that come along with working for the Economic Development Department. Sixty-five different restaurants within walking distance, a brewery across the street, and retail opportunities right outside my office. How lucky are those that have this amenity outside their door? But things are changing, and depending on the observer, some would contend that the changes are for the worse. I disagree, and here is why.

Caterpillar Does it Again! 1,400 Employees - Another Goal Met Early

In 2013, Caterpillar made a decision to invest in this community on a site at the west end of Atlanta Highway. As a part of their agreement with the State of Georgia they were obligated to create 1,390 jobs at the site by 2020. Caterpillar achieved their job creation goal this year – a full five years ahead of schedule.

Athens-Clarke County Designated as a Tier 2 Community

Each year, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs ranks all of Georgia’s 159 counties based on the following economic factors: unemployment rate for the most recent 36 month period, per capita income for the most recent 36 month period, and percentage of residents whose incomes are below the poverty level. Athens-Clarke County has traditionally been a Tier 1 community, but has been designated a Tier 2 community for 2015.
